Mute cornetti in G
Four of the straight instruments preserved in the Vienna Collection (SAM 221, SAM 222, SAM 223 & SAM 224) have a very similar length to the soprano instruments in the same collection (when measured with mouthpiece). They are therefore high-pitched instruments (around A = 470 Hz. for most players) in G instead of F, the „standard“ modern tonality for mute cornetti.
The carved-in embouchure cup of these instruments is very shallow although, much shallower than the usual modern mute embouchure. It is a good question if these instruments were really intended to be „mute“ cornetti or rather straight soprano cornetti.
Bellow there is a brief description of each instrument and its embouchure.
